Wings Tame Terriers

The Weyburn Red Wings saw their winning streak extended to 6 last night after a 2-1 win over Yorkton @ C.P.P.

It wasn't a pretty one, but the Wings will take in.

A.J. Whiffen looked solid again making 29 saves including a massive glove save on Torrey Stott in the 3rd period when the Wings were up 1-0.

Weyburn got that goal on the p.p. just 2:45 into the 1st as Rhys Thomas threw the puck on net, it changed directions and beat Joel Danyluk.

Many thought, including yours truly, Lucus Ulmer deflected the puck, but according to Ulmer, he did not so Thomas gets credit for the goal.

The score remained 1-0 until the 3rd when the Wings went up a pair on Forrest Dell's 5th of the season.

Dell got a nice bounce off the end glass in the Yorkton zone and the puck found his stick and he put it by Danyluk who had no chance.

The Terriers got to within 1 when John Neibrandt's shot from the point beat a screened A.J. Whiffen.

Yorkton thought they tied it up as Torrey Stott deflected the puck out of the air and it went by Whiffen but the referee said Stott's stick was too high and waved off the goal with 2:05 to go in the 3rd.

Weyburn moves 9 points up on Kindersley for 1st in the Sherwood. (someone really has to fix the Klippers standings, sometimes they were 6 points back heading into last night now they are 9, so there was something wrong with the league's website as of yesterday)

The Wings go back at it Friday when they will play the first of 2 in Flin Flon.

Red Wing Radio AM 1190 will have both games this weekend starting with the pregame show at 7:20.

Should be a fun weekend in the Flon as the Whitney Forum is always a fun place to call hockey games because those fans really love their hockey club and with the Bombers first in the Bauer, I'm expecting some really good crowds.

Cheers!

Wings to Take on Terriers Tonight

The Weyburn Red Wings look to run their winning streak to 6 tonight as they host Yorkton.

The Wings have won 2 of 3 regular season meetings between the two clubs this season.

Weyburn is 11 points up on Yorkton in the standings, but don't let that fool you.

The Terriers are known for playing solid defensive hockey on the road.

I'm predicting the line of Rodney and Shawn Cowie and Kyle Johnson to have a big game tonight, for no reason that they are overdue in getting some goals.

Opening faceoff is 7:30 at C.P.P.

Meanwhile, the league has announced their Players of the Week and there still maybe a question or two on how members of the Weyburn Red Wings were overlooked.

The Forward of the Week was Kyle Ireland of Notre Dame-deserved.
The Defenceman of the Week was Scott Brkich of Nipawin- no disagreement
The Goalie of the Week was Chris Neamonitis of Estevan- while he did play very good for the Bruins over the past week, including a pair of losses to Weyburn, one might question his number of wins to a guy like A.J. Whiffen over the past week or Tanner Erickson.

Neamonitis' numbers- 1-2 with a 1.33 G.A.A. and a save % of .958
Whiffen's number's- 2-0 with a 1.50 G.A.A. and a save % of .932
Erickson's numbers- 1-0 with a 0.00 G.A.A and a save % of 1.000

Let the debate begin.

Erickson Shuts the Door on the Bruins

The Weyburn Red Wings ran their winning streak to 5 last night as they left Estevan with a 2-0 victory.

Tanner Erickson was solid again between the pipes, turning aside all 32 shots he faced for his 2nd straight shut-out.

Tyler Penny broke the scoreless game around 3 minutes into the 3rd on a nice deflection from a point shot from T.J. Wees on the power play that beat Bruin goaltender Chris Neamonitis to give Weyburn a 1-0 lead.

Penny would then put the game away with an empty netter with less than a second to go in the 3rd for the 2-0 final.

Weyburn winning both games against the Bruins this weekend, but the Bruins are an improved team with Neamonitis in net and if they are able to get to the playoffs, could be a dangerous club.

Estevan forward Chad Filteau and defenceman Lucus Stubel did not play Saturday after sustaining injuries Friday in Weyburn.

Red Wing forward Kyle Johnson came to the aid of team mate Shawn Cowie in the 2nd period after Cowie was hit by Bruin defenceman Christopher Neurauter in the neutral zone.

Johnson picked up the instigator but the Bruins failed to capitalize on the man advantage.

Weyburn going 1-8 with the power play with the Bruins going 0-6.

Wings next game is Tuesday night when Yorkton comes to town.

Wings Beat Bruins

The Weyburn Red Wings extended their winning streak to 4 last night after a 2-1 win over Estevan @ C.P.P.

It was scoreless after one, then in the 2nd Brennan Wrigley got the Wings on the board with his 7th of the year as he beat Bruin goaltender Chris Neamonitis to give Weyburn a 1-0 lead just 1:20 into the period.

Estevan would then capitalize a few minutes later on the power play as Tyler Spencer let a shot go in the slot, A.J. Whiffen got most of the puck but it trickled by Whiffen into the back of the net to even the game up at 1.

Weyburn went ahead 2-1 at the 11:31 mark when Tyler Penny received a pass from Rhett Bly and buried the puck past Neamonitis to give Weyburn a 2-1 lead.

There was no scoring in the 3rd but plenty of action in this contest.

Red Wing forward Richard Hilton was taken down on a breakaway in the 3rd and was awarded a penalty shot but Neamonitis shut the door.

Red Wing forward Lucus Ulmer was given a 5 minute tripping major for a check on Lucus Stubel.

Stubel left the game and it was clear he didn't know where he was.

Mark Cross came to the aid of his team mate and he and Ulmer went toe-to-toe right in front of the Red Wing bench.

The Wings killed off that 3 minutes power play.

After the game, I was told the Ulmer's stick was no where near Stubel as it was a shoulder to shoulder check (I was watching the puck being dumped in, so I missed the hit, I heard it but didn't see it) so until I see the replay for myself, I can't comment.

Estevan forward Chad Filteau left the game in the 2nd period after taking a solid, clean hit from Red Wing forward Brennan Wrigley.

Filteau was favoring a shoulder as he was making his way to the Bruin dressing room.

The Wings and Bruins go back at it tonight in Estevan.

Pregame show is at 7:20 on Red Wing Radio AM 1190 or discoverweyburn.com

See you in Estevan, Cheers!

Battle of Highway 39 Renewed This Weekend

There should be a pair of packed rinks in the Southeast this weekend as the Weyburn Red Wings and Estevan Bruins meet up for 2 games in 2 nights.

Weyburn hosts the Bruins Friday before a rematch Saturday night at the Civic Auditorium.

Weyburn is 2-0 against the Bruins this season but Estevan had made some recent moves to improve their hockey club.

The Bruins picked up 20 year old goaltender Chris Neamonitis (Kirkland QC) from the Fort McMurray Oil Barons of the AJHL.

Neamonitis was in goal for the Bruins 5-1 victory over Yorkton Wednesday night.

The Wings have won 3 in a row and sit 8 points up on Kindersley for 1st in the Sherwood.

Saturday's game will be broadcast on AM 1190 and discoverweyburn.com.

Pregame show Saturday is 7:20.

Should be a good weekend of hockey and GO WINGS GO!!!

Wings Escape With Win Over Hounds

The Weyburn Red Wings got by the Notre Dame Hounds 3-2 in overtime last night at Crescent Point Place.

Rhett Bly scored the overtime goal just 12 seconds into the extra period.

Bly received a pass from Brennan Wrigley in front of the Hounds goal and Bly made no mistake by burying the puck past Hounds goaltender Matthew Smidt.

Weyburn was down 2-0 after the first and second period, but Rodney Cowie opened up the Wings scoring at the 8:00 mark of the 3rd.

Cowie hit the post in the 1st but was rewarded by going to the net in the 3rd as Kyle Johnson found Cowie with a pass and he made no mistake.

Weyburn tied up the game over 4 minutes later, right off an offensive zone face-off, Bly pushed the puck forward and fed it over to Tyler Penny who found the back of the net.

A.J. Whiffen got the win in goal for Weyburn.

The Wings move 9 points up on Notre Dame for 1st in the Sherwood.

The Hounds played a solid game last night and will be a tough team to play against this season.

Weyburn goes back at it Friday when Estevan comes to town.

Wings Host Hounds Tonight

The Weyburn Red Wings will go for their 3rd straight win tonight when Notre Dame comes to town.

This will be the 1st meeting of the season between the two clubs this season so I am unsure what the Hounds will look like, I do know it won't be an easy game for the Red Wings.

Weyburn is coming off a bit of a high after winning both of their games in La Ronge on the weekend.

Game time is 7:30 @C.P.P.

With tomorrow being a holiday, let's pack the rink tonight and get behind our guys.

They are ranked 8th in the country for a reason.

And speaking of the holiday tomorrow.

We should all take a moment to remember those who fought or are still fighting for our country and recognize the men and women who gave their lives for our freedoms.

Remembrance Day is Wednesday.

The day has extra meaning to me, as my Grandfather was a pilot in WWII.

So I know I will be thinking of Harold Allan Hill tomorrow.

See you at the rink, the game will be on the Red Wings website.

Red Wings Silence Ice Wolves

I would have got to this blog while in La Ronge but the Internet was not working at our hotel, so this update is a little later than I would have wanted it to be.

The Weyburn Red Wings picked up a pair of wins in La Ronge over the weekend.

Weyburn beat the Ice Wolves Friday night 5-2.

Chris Daniels scored 3 times, Tyler Penny and Kyle Johnson also scored in the win for Weyburn while Tanner Erickson was spectacular in net, stopping 40 of the 42 shots he faced.

The Red Wings really shut down their top line for most of the weekend, aside from a Doug Lindensmith short-handed goal Friday, Lindensmith, Ben Findlay and Travis Gordan did not do much.

Weyburn returned to the ice Saturday, maybe a little tired with only 20 guys on the bus and the events we had to go through Saturday morning which I will get to in a moment.

The game Saturday was close again.

Erickson was terrific, stopping all 42 shots he faced to pick up the shut-out in a 3-0 win.

Tyler Penny scored twice and Brennan Wrigley also scored for Weyburn.

The Wings had a knack of capitalizing on Ice Wolves mistakes this weekend, the first 2 goals for Weyburn were give aways by the Ice Wolves which led directly to the goals.

The Wings played some of their best hockey of the season over the weekend with all 20 guys working really hard and they deserved all 4 points they got.

Weyburn goes back at it tomorrow night when Notre Dame comes to town.

Game time is 7:30 at C.P.P.

Now getting to the long day Saturday.

Got to love having the fire alarm go off at 3am Saturday morning at our hotel for about ten minutes and then going off at around 3:20am.

Made for a short night sleep.

Then we were asked to take part in the Olympic Torch Relay Ceremonies, so we had a breakfast at the community hall, then did the Torch Walk and waited around for the Torch to be lit up, which happened around 12:15pm.

I knew a lot of the guys got in naps, which I wasn't so lucky.

Enjoyed getting back on the air with the broadcasts, hope you enjoyed them.

Like to thank Bill Burfoot for helping me out this weekend.

Cheers!

Red Wings Head to La Ronge

The Weyburn Red Wings will board the bus this afternoon and make the long trek to La Ronge for games tomorrow and Saturday.

Weyburn will look to bounce back after a tough outing Tuesday when they lost 6-0 to Melville.

Now, I will be making the trip with the team this weekend so you can listen to the games on AM 1190 or DiscoverWeyburn.com.

I've posted a link to the streaming part of the website where you can listen to the game.

Let's hope this weekend turns out to be a good one.

And for those looking for an update after the game Saturday, it will be a little tough since I will be on the bus for about 8 hours so I won't be able to post on the blog until Sunday morning, which will more than likely be in the afternoon since sleep on the bus is rare for me.

So stay tuned for the broadcasts and let's bring 4 points back this weekend!

Moreover, Perrault continues to assert himself in a physical way and has become a real important leader on a Weyburn team that is threatening to run away from the pack in the Sherwood Conference. For the season, Perrault has 2-goals and 11-assists in 17-games.Runners-up: Michael Young, Flin Flon; Mike Alexander, La Ronge; Harrison Tribble, Melfort; Justin Hollinger, Melville; Taylor Thiessen, Nipawin.

Kerpan was 2-1-and-1 with an almost unbeatable 0.98-GAA and a .972-SPCT. He was dealt from Flin Flon to Nipawin late in the month and made his debut with the Hawks on October 30th, playing in a 0-0 tie with the Weyburn Red Wings, only to lose the game in a shootout. Kerpan’s numbers are all the more impressive when you factor the team in front of him (Flin Flon & Nipawin) generated an average of just 1.46-goals per game of offense.Runners-up: Matt Weninger, Flin Flon; AJ Whiffen, Weyburn; Josh Thorimbert, Kindersley; Charlie Pogue, Melfort; Luke Boechler, Yorkton.

SJHL ROOKIE OF THE MONTH

Thorimbert saw the lion’s share of the work in October between the pipes for the Klippers and he led them with a 7-and-2 record to go along with a 2.31-GAA and .933-SPCT. Overall, he’s 8-and-2, 2.45, .926. Runners-up: Justin Buzzeo, Humboldt; Andrew Johnston, Flin Flon; Chris Daniels, Weyburn; Charlie Pogue, Melfort; Luke Boechler, Yorkton; Dylan Smith, Estevan.

SJHL DEFENSEMAN OF THE WEEK

Michael Young, Flin Flon Bombers
1989 D Michael Young (Calgary AB) had four points in three games and he also led a defense that was, especially, stingy over the last seven days as the Bombers were a perfect 3-and-0, allowing just one goal in each of their three wins. Young had a fantastic offensive night on Halloween, getting a goal and two assists in Melfort. For the season, Young has 4-goals and 14-assists in 18-games.Runners-up: Justin Perreaux, Kindersley; Dustin Stevenson, La Ronge; Austin Krahenbil, Melville; Mitch Berg, Melfort.

Runners-up: Ryan Kerpan, Nipawin; AJ Whiffen, Weyburn; Devin Peters, Yorkton; Josh Baker, Kindersley.

Wings Get By Struggling Hawks

The Weyburn Red Wings had their chances Friday night, but it took until overtime to send the crowd at Crescent Point Place home happy.

Tyler Penny scored with just under 1:00 to go in overtime to give the Red Wings the win.

Rhett Bly picked up the lone assist on the goal as Penny beat newly acquired goaltender Ryan Kerpan on Weyburn's 42nd shot of the game.

A.J. Whiffen wasn't nearly as busy but when called upon, he stood his ground to stop all 22 shots he faced for the shut-out.

The Wings lead Yorkton and Kindersley by 6 points for first in the Sherwood.

Weyburn goes back at it Tuesday night when Melville comes to town.

Game time is 7:30 at C.P.P.

Well Rested Red Wing Set for Showdown with Hawks

The Weyburn Red Wings have been hard at work over the past few days looking to keep their game legs going.

Weyburn last played on Sunday, a 5-4 shoot-out loss in Humboldt.

The Wings host Nipawn tomorrow night at Crescent Point Place.

This is the 1st meeting between these 2 clubs this season so I'm not sure what to expect from the Hawks.

I do know they will have some new faces i the line-up after the recent trades, so maybe they will have a little extra jump in their step.

One thing I do know for sure, is they better bring their "A" game as the Red Wings have been one of if not the best team in the league all season long.

Game time tomorrow is 7:30.

Also let's not forget the Red Wings are holding as Halloween Bash Saturday from 1:45-3:15 at Crescent Point Place.

It's a chance for the children to skate with the guys, play some games in the lobby and get some free goodies courtesy of M&M Concessions.

Wings Return Home With 4 Points on Recent Road Trip

The Weyburn Red Wings are picking up points left and right this SJHL season.

The Wings going 1-0-0-2 on a 3 game in 3 game road trip over the weekend.

Weyburn has picked up at least a point in 14 of their first 16 games to start the season.

Last night, Weyburn was in Humboldt where the Broncos needed a shoot-out to get by the Red Wings 5-4.

Not something we see from Weyburn normally, the Wings blew a 2 goal lead in the 3rd period to allow the Broncos back on even ground.

A pair of 3rd period power play markers by the Broncos helped tie the game where they eventually won it in the S.O.

Saturday, Weyburn was in the Battlefords where it was a tale of reverse roles from last night's game.

Weyburn trailed the Stars in the 3rd period but battled back to squeak out a point in a 5-4 SO loss.

The Wings opened up the weekend on a great note by doubling Kindersley 6-3.

Weyburn leads Yorkton by 6 points for 1st in the Sherwood.

Weyburn has earned 10 points out of a possible 12 in their last 6 games on the road, not too many teams around the League can say they have had that kind of success away from their home building.

The Wings with some well deserved time off before hosting Nipawin Friday at C.P.P.

Elsewhere last night, La Ronge blanked Estevan 5-0.

The Bruins losing all 3 games on their 3 game in 3 night road trip which begs to ask the question, what is happening in Estevan?

Is is an early season slump? Injuries? Goaltending? Consistency? or all of the above?
